WARNING
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, which enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.

WARNING
The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley. Therefore, the engine must be retimed each time the damper is removed. Otherwise severe engine damage can occur.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front RH wheel and tire.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the valve cover, as outlined in this section.
    WARNING
Failure to position the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) can result in damage to the engine. Turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation only.
  6. Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston at TDC. The hole in the crankshaft pulley should be in the 6 o'clock position.
    WARNING
The special tool 303-465 is for camshaft alignment only. Using this tool to prevent engine rotation can result in engine damage.

    NOTE
The camshaft timing slots are offset. If the special tool cannot be installed, rotate the crankshaft one complete revolution clockwise to correctly position the camshafts.

  8. Remove the engine plug bolt.
    NOTE
The special tool will contact the crankshaft and prevent it from turning past TDC. However, the crankshaft can still be rotated in the counterclockwise direction. The crankshaft must remain at the TDC position during the crankshaft pulley removal and installation.
  9. Install Crankshaft Timing Peg 303-057 or equivalent special tool.

    WARNING
Failure to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while loosening the bolt can result in damage to the engine.

    WARNING
If the crankshaft sprocket diamond washer comes off with the crankshaft pulley it must be installed back onto the crankshaft.

NOTE
Do not reuse the crankshaft pulley bolt.

NOTE
Apply clean engine oil on the seal area before installing.

  1. Install the crankshaft pulley and hand-tighten the bolt.
    WARNING
Only hand-tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover can occur.

    NOTE
The following 2 steps will correctly align the crankshaft pulley to the crankshaft.
  2. Install a standard 6-mm (0.23-in.) x 18-mm (0.7-in.) bolt through the crankshaft pulley and thread it into the front cover.
  3. Rotate the pulley as necessary to align the bolt holes.
    WARNING
Failure to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while tightening the bolt can cause damage to the engine front cover.
  4. Using the special tools to hold the crankshaft pulley in place, tighten the crankshaft pulley bolt in 2 stages:

Stage 1: Tighten to 74 ft. lbs. (100 Nm).
Stage 2: Tighten an additional 90 degrees (1/4 turn).
  5. Remove the 6-mm (0.23-in.) x 18-mm (0.7-in.) bolt.
  6. Remove the special tools.
    NOTE
Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
  7. Turn the engine 2 complete revolutions.
    NOTE
Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
  8. Turn the crankshaft until the No. 1 piston is at TDC.
  9. Install the special crankshaft timing peg tool.
    WARNING
Only hand-tighten the bolt or damage to the front cover can occur. Using the 6-mm (0.23-in.) x 18-mm (0.7-in.) bolt, check the position of the crankshaft pulley. If it is not possible to install the bolt, correct the engine timing.
  10. Using the camshaft alignment plate special tool, check the position of the camshafts. If it is not possible to install the special tool, correct the engine timing.
  11. Remove the 6-mm (0.23-in.) x 18-mm (0.7-in.) bolt.
  12. Install the engine plug bolt and tighten to 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm).
  13. Install the accessory drive belt.
  14. Install the valve cover.
2.5L Model, Except Hybrid
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2009
Mercury Mariner 2009
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
Do not loosen or remove the crankshaft pulley bolt without first installing the special tools as instructed in this procedure. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if the pulley bolt is loosened. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special service tools, otherwise severe engine damage can occur.

    NOTE
During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material (including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces) that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.

  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
  3. Remove the front RH wheel and tire.
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. Remove the valve cover.
    NOTE
Failure to position the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC) can result in damage to the engine. Turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation only.

    NOTE
Using the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston at Top Dead Center (TDC). The hole in the crankshaft pulley should be in the 6 o'clock position.

    NOTE
The camshaft alignment plate is for camshaft alignment only. Using this tool to prevent engine rotation can result in engine damage.

    NOTE
The camshaft timing slots are offset. If the camshaft alignment plate cannot be installed, rotate the crankshaft one complete revolution clockwise to correctly position the camshafts.

  8. Install the crankshaft TDC timing peg.
    NOTE
The crankshaft must remain in the Top Dead Center (TDC) position during removal of the pulley bolt or damage to the engine can occur. Therefore, the crankshaft pulley must be held in place with the crankshaft damper holding tool, and the bolt should be removed using an air impact wrench (1/2-in drive minimum).

    NOTE
The crankshaft sprocket diamond washer may come off with the crankshaft pulley. The diamond washer must be replaced. Remove and discard the diamond washer. If the diamond washer is not installed, engine damage may occur.
