How to Replace Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters on Ford Escape and Mercury Mariner?


The procedure is similar for both Ford and Mercury car models:----

The details to replace Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters is as follows:----

Camshaft, Bearings & Lifters
INSPECTION
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION:--

Inspection



  1. Inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or damage in the contact area. Minor pitting is acceptable outside the contact area. If excessive pitting or damage is present replace components as necessary.
  2. Check for valve tappet face wear.
  3. Check for excessive valve tappet clearance.

Removal & Installation



2.3L Engines
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
    WARNING
    During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan can cause engine failure.  


    WARNING
    The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket and the pulley are fitted together by friction, using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. For that reason, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley. Therefore, the engine must be retimed each time the damper is removed. Otherwise severe engine damage can occur.
  2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. 
    NOTE
    Valve tappets are select fit and the valve clearance must be checked before removing the tappets.


    WARNING
    Turn the engine clockwise only, and only use the crankshaft bolt.


    NOTE
    Before removing the camshafts, measure the clearance of each valve at base circle, with the lobe pointed away from the tappet. Failure to measure all clearances prior to removing the camshafts will necessitate repeated removal and installation and wasted labor time.

  3. Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance of each valve and record its location.
    NOTE
    The number on the valve tappet only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm.


    NOTE
    A midrange clearance is the most desirable:

    Intake: 0.22-0.28 mm (0.008-0.011 inch)
    Exhaust: 0.27-0.33 mm (0.010-0.013 inch)
  4. Select tappets using this formula: tappet thickness = measured clearance + the base tappet thickness-most desirable thickness.
  5. Select the tappets and mark the installation location.
  6. If any tappets do not measure within specifications, install new tappets in these locations.
  7. Remove the timing chain and sprockets.
  8. Mark the position of the camshaft lobes on the No. 1 cylinder for assembly reference.
    WARNING
    Failure to follow the camshaft loosening procedure can result in damage to the camshafts.
  9. Loosen the camshaft bearing bolts in the sequence shown, one turn at a time. Repeat until all the tension is released.
  10. Remove the camshaft bearing caps.
    WARNING
    If the camshafts and valve tappets are to be reused, mark the location of the valve tappets to make sure they are assembled in their original positions.


    NOTE
    The number on the valve tappets only reflects the digits that follow the decimal. For example, a tappet with the number 0.650 has the thickness of 3.650 mm.
  11. Remove the camshafts.
  12. Valve tappets.
  13. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Coat the valve tappets with clean engine oil and insert them.
    WARNING
    Install the camshafts with the alignment slots in the camshafts lined up so the Camshaft Alignment Plate can be installed without rotating the camshafts. Make sure the lobes on the No. 1 cylinder are in the same position as noted in the removal procedure. Rotating the camshafts when the timing chain is removed, or installing the camshafts 180 degrees out of position can cause severe damage to the valves and pistons.


    NOTE
    Lubricate the camshaft journals and bearing caps with clean engine oil.

  14. Install the camshafts and bearing caps. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in three stages.
    1. Stage 1: Tighten the camshaft bearing bolt caps one turn at a time until tight.
    2. Stage 2: Tighten the bolts to 62 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
    3. Stage 3: Tighten the bolts to 12 ft. lbs. (16 Nm).
3.0L Engines
Left Side
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2006-2008
Mercury Mariner 2006-2008
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Water pump belt
    Timing drive components
    Camshaft oil seal
    Camshaft oil seal retainer
    Camshaft cap bolts by loosening them in sequence
    Camshafts

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft bearing caps in their original position
    Align the camshafts
    Bearing thrust caps and hand tighten the bolts. When aligned properly, torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Timing drive components
    Camshaft oil seal retainer
    Crankshaft oil seal
    Water pump drive pulley
    Water pump belt
    Negative battery cable
Right Side
Specific to:
Ford Escape 2006-2008
Mercury Mariner 2006-2008
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the Precautions Section.
  2. Remove or disconnect the following:

    Negative battery cable
    Timing drive components
    Camshaft cap bolts by loosening them in sequence
    Camshafts caps
    Camshafts

To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:

    Camshaft bearing caps in their original position
    Align the camshafts
    Bearing caps and hand tighten the bolts
    Bearing thrust caps and hand tighten the bolts. When aligned properly, torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
    Timing drive components
    Negative battery cable
