How to replace Accessory Drive Belts on Ford Fusion, Lincoln MKZ & Mercury Milan?


The procedure is similar for both Ford, Lincoln and Mercury car models:----

The procedure to replace Accessory Drive Belts is as follows:---

Belt tension is maintained by an automatic belt tensioner. No adjustments are necessary.

Inspection



Specific to:
Ford Edge 2008-2009
Ford Fusion 2008-2009
Lincoln MKX 2008-2009
Lincoln MKZ 2008-2009
Mercury Milan 2008-2009
Inspect the drive belt for signs of glazing or cracking. A glazed belt will be perfectly smooth from slippage, while a good belt will have a slight texture of fabric visible. Cracks will usually start at the inner edge of the belt and run outward. All worn or damaged drive belts should be replaced immediately.

Removal & Installation



Specific to:
Ford Edge 2008-2009
Lincoln MKX 2008-2009

WARNING
NEVER lubricate the accessory drive belt, tensioner or pulleys as this will cause potential damage to the belt material and tensioner damping mechanism. Do not apply any fluids or any type of belt dressing to the accessory drive belt or pulleys.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Working from the top of the vehicle, use a suitable belt tensioner release tool to rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the alternator pulley.
  3. Remove the RH inner fender splash shield..
  4. Working from underneath the vehicle, remove the accessory drive belt.

To install:
  1. Working from underneath the vehicle, install the accessory drive belt on all pulleys, except the alternator pulley.
    WARNING
    Make sure the belt is properly routed and correctly seated on all pulleys.
  2. Working from the top of the vehicle, position the accessory drive belt on the alternator pulley, then use a suitable belt tensioner release tool to rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt on the alternator pulley.
  3. Install the RH inner fender splash shield.
  4. Carefully lower the vehicle.
Accessory Drive Belt
2.3L Engine
Specific to:
Ford Fusion 2008-2009
Mercury Milan 2008-2009

WARNING
NEVER lubricate the accessory drive belt, tensioner or pulleys as this will cause potential damage to the belt material and tensioner damping mechanism. Do not apply any fluids or any type of belt dressing to the accessory drive belt or pulleys.

  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the 4 screws and position the RH fender splash shield aside.
  3. Remove the 6 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
  4. Using the hex feature, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the coolant pump pulley.

  5. Remove the accessory drive belt from the engine.
  6. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Make sure the belt is properly routed.
3.0L Engine
Specific to:
Ford Fusion 2008-2009
Mercury Milan 2008-2009
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the 4 screws and position the RH fender splash shield aside.
  3. Remove the 6 pin-type retainers and the RH splash shield.
  4. Using a suitable belt tensioner release tool, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner counterclockwise and remove the accessory drive belt.
  5. To install, reverse the removal procedure. Make sure the belt is properly routed.
Coolant Pump Belt
3.0L Engine
  1. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  2. If equipped, remove the 2 nuts and the coolant belt pump shield.
  3. Cut and remove the coolant pump belt.
  4. Discard the belt.
To install:

NOTE
To install the coolant pump belt, remove the 2 splash shields for access to the crankshaft bolt.

  1. Remove the 4 screws and position the RH fender splash shield aside.
  2. Remove the 6 pin-type retainers (4 shown) and the RH splash shield.
  3. Install the coolant pump belt on the coolant pump pulley and position it on the camshaft pulley.
    WARNING
    Do not use any screwdrivers, pliers or other metal objects that could cause damage to the belt or camshaft pulley while installing the belt.
  4. Rotate the crankshaft clockwise to seat the coolant pump belt on the camshaft pulley.
  5. If equipped, install the coolant pump belt shield and the nuts. Tighten to 53 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
  6. Install the RH splash shield and the 6 pin-type retainers.
  7. Position the RH fender splash shield and install the 4 screws.
Power Steering Pump Belt

WARNING
NEVER lubricate the accessory drive belt, tensioner or pulleys as this will cause potential damage to the belt material and tensioner damping mechanism. Do not apply any fluids or any type of belt dressing to the accessory drive belt or pulleys.

  1. Working from the top of the vehicle, use a suitable belt tensioner release tool to rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the alternator pulley.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the RH inner fender splash shield..
  4. Remove the accessory drive belt from the crankshaft pulley.
  5. Install the special tool between the power steering pump belt and pulley, then turn the crankshaft bolt clockwise to remove the power steering belt.

To install:
  1. Install the power steering belt on the crankshaft pulley.
    WARNING
    Make sure the belt is correctly seated on the crankshaft and power steering pulleys.
  2. Position the power steering belt around the special tool and the power steering pulley. Make sure that the belt is engaged with the power steering pulley and rotate the crankshaft clockwise to install the power steering belt.

  3. Install the accessory drive belt on the crankshaft pulley.
    WARNING
    Make sure the belt is properly routed and correctly seated on all pulleys.
  4. Working from the top of the vehicle, place the accessory drive belt on the alternator pulley. Using a suitable belt tensioner release tool, rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise and install the accessory drive belt on the generator pulley.
  5. Install the RH inner fender splash shield.
